Quick Photoshop Gear Tutorial by dinn Quick Photoshop Gear Tutorial by dinn
As requested, this is the 20-minute companion tutorial for Gears for the Industrious [link] which is more detailed, more customizable, and done in Illustrator.

However, lacking Illustrator, you can create gears in Photoshop as well, using their cute little shapey vectory tools.

Heya, can you do me a favour and just explain how you get the image with the layer in the new Photoshop? (The little black square image on the right of your first explanation)?

What do you mean by new Photoshop? I am still working in CS4, so if something has changed, I may not be familiar with it.

I think you're talking about the first step? Is it a question about how to display the layer in a certain way in the Layers Panel?

:) Hi. I tried this tutorial out, but I couldn't seem to me the inside of the star be black. How did you do it?

Good question, Ruru! Hopefully I can help.

Select the Custom Shape you want (the Star), and make sure of THIS:

In the upper left hand corner of the tool bar, located somewhere just below File or Edit, there are three little square-shaped options. The first says Shape Layer, then Paths, then Fill Pixels. Make sure Shape Layer is selected there. That tells PS to use the Shape tool to create Shape Layer.

When you draw the Star now, it should automatically fill with the foreground color. In the Layer area, you can double click on the square in the Layer to change the color of the shape.

Does that help?

Very nice! Sadly, I do not use Illustrator, so I am unable to use your other wonderful tutorial. So, thank you for this!
